In religiously conservative Jacksonville, high school sweethearts and later husband and wife Elizabeth and Tom Taylor live the American dream. But when two of their sons are diagnosed with incurable mental and physical disabilities, the couple falls into a deep depression. During this crisis, Tom, at the age of 50, discovers his long-suppressed homosexuality and leaves his family to start a new life as an artist in New York. But his guilty conscience soon catches up with him.
